What is Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure done repair a misshapen, fractured, chipped, decayed, or discolored tooth. A composite material is used that is matched to your natural teeth. Dental bonding is a cost effective way to get that white smile you have always wanted. Not only can bonding change the shape of a tooth, it can close spaces and help lengthen a tooth also. Anesthesia is usually not necessary, and this type of procedure can be done in one day.
How does dental bonding work?
Dental bonding is done right in the convenience of our office and little preparation is needed. Local anesthesia is typically not used unless the bonding is used for a decayed tooth. The composite resin color is selected to best match your natural teeth. Next, the surface of the tooth is made rough and a conditioning liquid is applied. This helps the material bond to the tooth.
The composite resin is applied to the area, and then cured with an ultraviolet light. The tooth is then shaped and polished to match your natural teeth.
How long will my Dental Bonding last?
Once you have dental bonding placed on your teeth, you must take good care of them. The composite material is durable, but is not as strong as your natural teeth. With dental bonding there are risks, and the composite material can separate from your tooth, chip, or even break off. These risks are unlikely, but we do recommend patients follow good oral hygiene habits at home. Bonding can last anywhere from 3 to 10 years or longer if cared for properly.
