What are fluoride treatments and why are they necessary?
Fluoride varnish helps to protect teeth from tooth decay, and is a mineral found naturally in our water. Fluoride treatment consists of a concentrated solution or gel that is painted on the tooth’s surface. This treatment is typically done after your dental cleaning, and helps to prevent cavities and keep your teeth strong.
Fluoride treatment helps to ward off harmful bacterial by making our teeth more resistant to acid from plaque and sugars. We recommend patients get fluoride treatment every six months. This treatment is beneficial to patients that are at risk for tooth decay, and those that are prone to cavities.
How is fluoride applied?
The fluoride is painted on each tooth and the process only takes a few minutes to complete. Fluoride solution is flavored and tastes great. After the treatment is complete, we ask patients to not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes. This helps to ensure the fluoride is absorbed into your teeth.
Fluoride treatment benefits both adults and children. This treatment not only helps to prevent cavities, but it creates a stronger outer surface on our teeth. Fluoride treatment is important for children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years old because this is the age when primary and permanent teeth are erupting in the mouth. Fluoride is inexpensive, and most insurance companies provide coverage for treatment once a year.
Other benefits of fluoride treatment

- Reduces the risk of cavities
- Slows the growth of cavities
- Fluoride is contained in most toothpastes, and this helps to fight tooth decay while brushing.
