What Are inlays and onlays?
Porcelain inlays and onlays are typically used when a tooth does not have enough structure left for a filling, or when a tooth does not have enough damage to require a crown. Inlays and Onlays are used to treat moderate levels of damage or decay. They are tooth colored and not only correct damage, but blend in with the color of our natural teeth.
Porcelain inlays and onlays help to restore a damaged tooth back to its normal function, and are custom made. They can be used to cover larger parts of a tooth as well as a smaller area on a molar.
What to expect during an Inlay or Onlay procedure?
Inlays and onlays typically require two appointments. During the first appointment we take impressions of the tooth and prepare the damaged tooth for treatment. We send the impressions out to a lab to create the custom inlay or onlay. Temporary inlays and onlays are available while the patient waits for the permanent inlay or onlay to be installed.
The patient returns to our office for a second appointment, and the temporary inlay or onlay is removed. The permanent inlay/onlay is then cemented onto the tooth. We adjust the inlay or onlay to ensure it is the perfect fit, and the patient’s bite is aligned. Our goal is to ensure the inlay or onlay feels comfortable in the mouth.
Benefits of Inlays and Onlays:
- Provide a strong structure to help restore a damaged tooth
- Inlays and onlays are made of a durable porcelain material that is the same color as our natural teeth
- Inlays and onlays can be used in place of crowns
